You might think you understand the consequences of that alternate reality you constructed in their heads, but they will keep making decisions based on that alternate reality, and eventually you will run into a long term effect that you didn't anticipate and be unable to get them to stop.
Totalitarians will punish those who don't believe the lies, not understanding the danger.
