This is a pretty good example of the local earthmoving guy serving two clients at once. One of my neighbors is doing some work on his property that requires the earthmoving guy to remove a bunch of basalt boulders. I need work done to partially fill in a gully and widen my driveway. Instead of dumping the rocks elsewhere, the earthmoving guy is simply moving them from my neighbor's place to mine. I think he's got one more load to dump today. (1/2)

All three of us benefit. The neighbor doesn't have to pay to have the rocks dumped elsewhere. I don't have to pay to buy the rocks. The earthmoving guy doesn't have to drive the rocks all the way into town or some dumping area.
Apparently, the neighbor is moving more rocks than I can take, but I trust the earthmoving guy to give me exactly what he needs to finish the job. #RuralLiving (2/2)

@mlanger Basalt boulders! They would be worth a lot in the desert. Does anyone there do dry walls (canβt remember the term)? Without mortar.
I moved great Arizona specimen small boulders 3 times in moving to homes here. Last time, both sons and occasional handyman said theyβd never move them again. The largest weigh about 200 pounds but a lot weigh 50-70 pounds. Good thing we bought this home.

@cobalt123 We've got no shortage of basalt boulders here. In fact, one of my neighbors bought her property and then began a mining operation, removing and selling the boulders. This is a residential area and our homeowner-maintained road could not handle the parade of dump trucks from 9 to 5 every weekday. The county shut her down. Ironically, she had recommended a friend buy the lot next door to do the same thing and now he's stuck with a lot that's pretty much worthless.

Scotland basalt columns I saw today@cobalt123 There is a neat section of curved ones like those along the Columbia river southeast of here. I'm sure I've captured an image of it from my helicopter back when I used to fly. The trick would be finding that image.
