I think I might go so far as to suggest that the reason so many software engineers hate R is that it's a language built to serve analysts, and engineers have never once considered the possibility that a programming language might not be built for *them*

I'm in the process of taking one of my load-bearing scripts and turning it into a package. It's fascinating watching what happens to my thinking when I flip from analyst to developer (and vice versa). Stylistically they are so utterly different, so much so I'm surprised we call them both "coding"
