Is there any way on Nixos to encrypt certain directories behind a password? -
Is there any way on Nixos to encrypt certain directories behind a password? It is at least technically possible to add LUKS full-disk encryption after the fact, but it's somewhat complex. (Basically, the process would be to shrink the file system, set up an unencrypted LUKS container for the key management, set up the system to use the LUKS container as the backing storage for the file system, and then re-encrypt the LUKS container to actually make use of encryption. Lots of things that can go wrong.)
I do agree though FDE seems a better fit.

Ok I'm having a question, please don't laugh at me for being dummieIf I (an EU based citizen) order sth from the US - will I also pay these extra tariffs?@dancrescentwolf Just like everyone has said: most likely the answer is no. The US tariffs I've heard of are US import tariffs, which means they are paid on imports into the US.
There is a small possibility that there might be retaliatory EU import tariffs or US *export* tariffs that I'm unaware of, but my suspicion there would be no. For anything non-trivial you will pay your national VAT plus customs fees plus possible administration fees, but that's the same as it's been for largely forever.

Live Translation with AirPods is not going to be available in the EU.@jordanjoesrtar Oh yes, the possibility of breaches is its own bucket of worms. And services absolutely can be designed to collect a minimum of data and throw it away immediately after first use. I was speaking more generally, though; for example, I might be fine emailing a friend about our upcoming get-together to agree on a time and place, but that doesn't mean I'm fine with my friend publishing the specifics of our plans for the world to see.
Privacy is a group effort.

Live Translation with AirPods is not going to be available in the EU.@mysk Right. *You* might be fine with *your* biometric data (specifically voice; I'm pretty sure that counts as biometric under a reasonable definition of biometric) being uploaded to who knows where for processing, but that doesn't mean that others around you are fine with it.
That's a problem with a lot of third-party data processing, actually; just because I, let's say, share something with you, does not mean I consent to your sharing it with a third party.

Anyone else sometimes feel self-conscious about non-technical people seeing some of the stuff you work on and thinking that's what all your work involves, or that, worse, your entire field is just like that@ret I almost wish I had no idea what you were talking about…
Or when you're doing something like waiting for a long-running automated process to finish, and someone happens to catch you right then finally getting a moment's relaxation after thinking through a problem for Who knows how long and feeling that yeah you've probably nailed it, and they get the idea that you get paid crazy well for just lounging around all day.

The fuck does _any_ manufacturer choose Realtek WiFi?"Hey there's this option (Intel) that is fast, stable, works with every operating system known to humanity ... let's choose Realtek instead!"😕@duncan_bayne Yes, there is that teeny tiny flaw in the logic there.
Maybe manufacturing plant supply chain arbitrage?

Want to add 2FA login to your app, but don't have time to set up a proper auth API?@lown If you vibe code the authentication part of your software, there's a good chance that you won't know yourself, either. Plausible deniability!

In other news; i switched to tidal from Spotify It was bugging me for years now that Spotify pays the artists basically no money.@Deepseacreatur3 What that also doesn't show is that Spotify only pays if an artist gets a certain number of streams (per year, IIRC). So if you're into niche artists, there's a nontrivial probability that even the rightsholder, much less the artist, gets *nothing*.
(I put the agreement between the rightsholder / label and the artist in the "can't do anything about that part" bucket, but I can *at least* use a streaming service that provides a quality experience and pays out more.)

🇩🇪YES!@echo_pbreyer This seems like a good time for people in #Germany, #Luxembourg and #Slovakia to contact their representatives and let them know that opposition is the right choice!
(And I do wish I wasn't in a country that's in favour.)

Not sure to what extent it will actually help, but I guess this is one of those things that can hardly hurt. Not sure to what extent it will actually help, but I guess this is one of those things that can hardly hurt. I might have to poke some at how to wrangle it into the RSS feed, but at least now my web site's robots.txt and every web page on the site has machine-readable RSL licensing metadata.

Hey #hiking friends from tick country.@rscottjones I haven't had to use a tick remover tool on humans much, but with the dogs, I have *never* been able to use that two-pronged style one effectively. I know it's supposedly easy, but for me, all I have ever managed has been to push the tick out of the way.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the lasso pen type. Easy to get in between the tick's head and the skin or fur, couple of turns and the tick generally comes out easily without leaving much behind or pulling too much else along.

I used to use a metaphor between AI and the Internet when explaining the immediacy of adoption and commercialization of the technology@dnsprincess Are there feet involved in that metaphor meaning?

*Degoogle Fact to Ponder #1*The GDP of the EU in 2024 was approx.@verified_human_user Talk about comparing apples and oranges.
If you want to compare a geographical region to a company in financial terms, then GDP (basically: the sum of economic activity) maps much more closely to turnover (basically: how much money is flowing through the company) than to market cap.
