It’s a bit of a headache tbh. I may raise a support thread on nodeBB and see if there is a solution. There does appear to be some issues with ActivityPub especially on the de-federation side. I have instances listed on there, but they are not being honoured, or simply the de-federation is not working. And some accounts, that I have ‘Deleted’ appear to come back. I have restarted nodeBB a couple of times this morning to see if that would fix it, but evidently not.

This is to keep track of issues that we are experiencing ‘Uncategorized’ category showing up on the home page. I am looking to have that removed, but it looks like some editing to the database is needed, and I do not know what I am doing with mongoDB in order to solve that. I am awaiting an update from the nodeBB developers. First post with images are small, sometimes with the message “This post did not contain any content” - Thread This is a Fediverse/ActivityPub issue, whether it’s how certain software (ie: Mastodon, Lemmy, Piefed) handles images/media or how nodeBB implements them. Additionally, videos, are not showing up at all on Caint. We may be waiting a while for an update (if there is one) - Foreign language posts - Thread This is another Fediverse/ActivityPub issue - Last week or so, I added some ActivityPub relays so we can be discovered by many servers. This has the downside of pulling in posts from instances and accounts which have foreign languages. I am keeping an eye on Recent from time-to-time to hopefully catch and remove them.

2025-10-01 Removed ‘Uncategorized’ from home page. You can still access it by clicking on the [image: 1759356371315-0051f05d-0c6b-49cc-aef9-bb7734afe652-image.png] icon on the left side. This has been reverted as access to certain ‘Remote’ categories were missing. Categories within @caint and @external have been updated to include the source location name.

Welcome to Caint. What? Caint is a new discussion board for Irish people to talk about Ireland and the world. Non-Irish can of course join and take part. Caint is the Irish word for talk or speech. As this is a forum, where we ‘talk’ to each other. Who? Caint is operated by me, myself and I. Why? Caint was set up as a response to the potential shutdown of an older, but popular forum, Boards.ie. I like forums and the Fediverse, so setting up a NodeBB website was a no-brainer. Where? This website is hosted in Germany, but operated out of Ireland. When? The site started as a new project under the old name ‘39’ but changed to 'Caint; in July 2025. How? This is being run out of pocket for a small amount. Check the finances thread for more info. Questions? Comments? @Comments-Feedback

This will serve as a public document of Caint finances. Everything is including VAT of 23% Caint.ie domain - €7.37 (This for Year 1 only. This will increase to €39.35 in Year 2 onwards) Hosting - €4.98 per month x12 = €59.78 Email - Free* nodeBB - Free SSL - Free Total: €67.15 in Year 1 €99.13 in Year 2 and beyond (Obviously not accounting for potential increases in hosting or domains between now and then) So it costs less than €100 per year to run this entire site for now. For the nerds, the hosting is a Hetzner Cloud server based in Nuremberg, Germany. A tiny 2 vCPU, with 4GB of RAM and 40GB HDD Storage. Nothing too crazy to start off with. * The email is part of my personal server that is separate from the Hosting server.

As we start out Caint, it would be cool to recognise anyone that joins within the first few months. So from now until December 31st, 2025, anyone who joins will automatically receive a “Mochóirí” label. Mochóirí is the Irish for ‘Early Bird’. Anyone who has signed up prior to this announcement has been granted the label. Share this post! Click the ⋮ and click Copy Permalink and paste it on social media. On the Fediverse? This is a rough draft of the rules for Caint. This is very bare bones, but should be OK for now. Of course, I welcome all suggestions for rule changes in @Comments-Feedback Updated: 15th September 2025 You must be the age of 18 or above to be a member of this website. We are not catering to children. English is the primary language of the website. Gaeilge is also allowed. Other languages are discouraged. There is to be no homophobia, transphobia, racism, fascism, bigotry, xenophobia nor sexism on this website. You may use curse words, but not slurs. It is expected that users act as adults, this is a website for discussion. Users may not always agree, this is not a reason for flame wars, name calling or otherwise being a git. Be polite and thorough in your posts, if you’re arguing a topic then provide thorough reasoning for your opinion. Do not feed trolls, if a user is flame baiting then use the report functionality, do not respond to the troll. All content submitted by a user must adhere to a PG-13 guideline. All questions and feedback relating to the website may be posted in the ‘Comments and Feedback’ section - @Comments-Feedback No posting of Warez/Serials/Cracks/keygens, or links to sites with said content. Do NOT ask for such things either. Repeated violations of this rule will lead to a permanent ban. No posting of referral links/get rich/get free [insert item here]/online voting links. Multiple accounts are forbidden unless approved by a staff member. While posting in topics, make sure to stay on topic. Sometimes conversations may veer off in a different direction. If this happens, posts may be split out in its own thread. Please wait about a day or so before ‘bumping’ your thread. We ask that you please ensure that the content that you are uploading is suitable for a general audience and does not contain any NSFW materials. Any content that is uploaded is of the sole responsibility of the user. Caint is not responsible for content that is posted. If you wish to have something removed from Caint, please email caint@caint.ie including a link to the page that the content is on. Certain section will have additional rules that must be adhered to alongside these main rules. These sections are: Politics (See below for a copy of the rules) The above rules are lightly applied in the following section(s) ONLY: The Caint Lock-in (See below for a copy of the rules) In order to join @politics, you must join the ‘Politics’ group. Click here to join @politics -specific rules: This is going to be an ever-changing document of rules for the Politics forum on Caint.ie. These rules are alongside the main Caint.ie rules (“Main Site Rules”). If a ruling here contradicts a ruling within the Main Site Rules, the rules here take precedence, but for this Politics section only. They may be updated without notice, so please check back every so often to refresh yourself on the rules. In the fairness of the rules for everyone, there will be a “3 Strike” system in place. Depending on the severity of the break, you may be removed from the Politics forum. Be nice. Don’t get into heated arguments/debates. You can disagree with something, but opinions should be respected. Don’t be inciting violence or protests. We don’t want Caint in the news, thank you. Try to provide sources where possible. Also, take the time to use an archiving tool to capture the news article at the time of publication. We recommend using https://archive.is/ more to come @caint -specific rules: Welcome to the Caint Lock‑in. Here, moderation is intentionally light, though the Main Sites Rules may be applied where needed. We’ll be importing hashtags and ActivityPub feeds from external forums to expand the content available on Caint. Because the imported content covers a wide range of topics including politics, current events, and other potentially sensitive subjects, some posts may be offensive to certain readers. I will do a brief check of threads to see if it’s appropriate to stay (Where I toe the line is not going to be agreeable by everyone. If additional ‘staff’ is added in the future, where they toe the line is at their discretion) Even though the content may be imported, you can still reply, upvote, report as normal. As a Caint member, you represent the community when you post, so please be courteous to all.

Accessibility is not only a necessity, but in certain cases a requirement - https://nda.ie/accessibility/european-accessibility-act I am not fully sure if Caint requires following the EAA, but I would prefer to have Accessibility options available, not to comply with any laws… because we will eventually have users that would require them. Now, as this is currently a 1-man-band, it may not be possible to implement everything right away, but it is something that can be worked on. As noted previously, there are various different looks to Caint, that may be more suitable for certain users. See https://caint.ie/topic/11/change-the-look-of-caint for more info. AltText for uploaded images are already here. Once the site is more established, and rules are going to be eventually drawn up, I will ensure that AltText becomes a requirement. Whenever you upload an image, you will see the following text: ![Screenshot_20250714_124132.png](/assets/uploads/files/1752493338920-screenshot_20250714_124132.png) After the file extension (png) and before the closing bracket ()), you can add AltText, by typing "This is AltText" So that it looks like this: ![Screenshot_20250714_124132.png](/assets/uploads/files/1752493338920-screenshot_20250714_124132.png "A screenshot of Caint with the option to select different themes.") If there is anything else that should be adjusted to improve accessibility, please reply and let me know.

By default, there is a light theme applied to the website. If you prefer a dark mode, or add a splash of colour, you can change the colour scheme. On the bottom left of the screen, you will see a paintbrush , click it and choose a look. The icon will pulsate letting you know it is being applied, and the page will refresh with the new look. If you have any questions, feedback or suggestions, please let me know! [image: 1752935561965-screenshot_20250719_153218.png]

It’s always good practice to look after the security of your accounts, even for discussion forums like Caint. To enable it, go to the following Click your profile picture/icon on the top right >> Click your username Select “Two-Factor Authentication” at the bottom. If you lose your 2FA device (hardware token, mobile phone) and you cannot recover it, please email caint@caint.ie from the email address that is associated with your account and the 2FA can be removed. If you have any issues, please let me know.
