Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted. This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate. We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history. This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you’re submitting before posting to see if it’s already been posted. We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed. No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don’t share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine. We don’t want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

    Is that what the situation is? I think that’s also only the case on 4k with brutal mode enabled or whatever. Obviously that’s still not great if so, but I’d still put it in the eyeroll category personally. I don’t really feel butthurt if I have to run at 1080p or enable vlss or not get 120fps or whatever, especially on day 1 for a game. But I come from an era where there were games you had to shrink some 3d games lower than 320x200 to get a playable 10fps, so I’m also probably feeling some “back in my day we walked uphill both ways - kids today” energy here. What do I know.

    The only one of those I really expect to show censorship resistance is Steam. And of that, I’m very curious if they’re going to see repercussions from it.

    I’d almost like for more of the control to go the other way. A director could negotiate with a composer about what mood is being asked for a particular moment in a game, leading to the composer making ideas for leitmotifs and buildup. Then, the game gets some number of adjustments or early planning to account for it. It sounds insane to reconfigure everything to match the music, but honestly, from some of my favorite moments in gaming, it can make a lot of sense. Some of the crescendo periods of Final Fantasy XIV felt incredibly well-earned from the way they had used the expansion’s whole soundtrack as a sort of ballad, repeating a few certain themes both story-wise and in the music. One example of a game that I think developed this dissonance is Ace Attorney. The main confrontational “gameplay” of those games is when you’re cross-examining a witness. The “Cross Examination” themes are some of the fan favorites - and since the beginning, they’ve had a second theme, Allegro, for when things are getting more intense. The Investigations games decided to put in a third theme, Presto, which goes loony for the sake of a culminating showdown of wits with the murderer, who has one last excuse as to why accusing them is impossible. It feels EPIC. Only one trouble; Ace Attorney is often a comedic series, and side characters are still acting stupid and making flat-falling jokes during that last cross examination, often breaking the mood of that great track. In my view, a “musically-directed” Ace Attorney would be fine with keeping up its signature silliness at all other points in the game, but keep the tone completely serious when that “Presto” theme is playing, to make it feel like a really personal boss fight.

    Today’s game is Guilty as Sock. I had a friend suggest playing it, and i saw it was on sale. So a decent chunk of money later (bye bye money i was saving) and almost everyone in my friend group had a copy. We played a good hour of the game. Each match is around 10 minutes for us. It’s a lot of improv though. It really brings me back to play D&D. Our Attorney is Chef, our Prosecutor is Italy, our Journalist is Shoes, and then i was the judge. Our case was Italy was accusing Shoes of being a little too dirty minded after a heated match of Mario Kart and Italy told Shoes to go fuck himself (in a playful way). Shoes replied back “Is this foreplay”, and so the court case ensued. This also showcases my first point about the game requiring improv, very much you need to have a good idea of your group dynamic to have the most fun. In Jokes and Personal Friendships reign supreme here. The blonde man in the middle is Italy, and the resemblance to anyone is entirely a coincidence. A very ironic one though. He couldn’t figure out how to change his character and was stuck like that. [image: JgnNhmnsHjA9NfWaGw8EdNiDYemkpdd68BWC5idP.jpg] They all presented their evidence, but it was all for nothing as the prosecutor ended up bribing Shoes to profess his guiltiness and i unfortunately had to give a guilty verdict. That brings me to the second point about this game. If you have a reoccurring friend group with petty and lighthearted disagreements, this game would be great for you. Hop into a session and have everyone setup as roles, and let the circus commence. This will probably be how we settle minor and humorous disagreements between each other. If i had to sum up this game, it’s “Sue your friends but not actually sue your friends” + wacky shenanigans. I suppose it’s nothing you couldn’t do with discord, but having the sock puppet theme makes it all feel a little more less personal if that makes sense.

    Free games from epic games store is NOT hoarding. You don’t really own them. The minute epic decides they are done with that store, you are out of luck and all your games. Getting free games via Amazon Prime from GOG however would be actual digital hoarding, since you can download and save the installer of every game there.

    I just wish people could understand that not all of us are looking for a ‘sense of accomplishment’ from playing a video game. I get that some people value that, great, stop acting like everyone needs to be the same Yeah this is why I think the ‘easy mode’ debate is so pointless. Majority of games cater to a frictionless generalized experience with a low barrier to entry (which I find very boring). The few games that try to challenge the players that like to be challenged arent designed to be for everyone. If every game was darksouls i’d understand the ‘easy mode’ side of the argument a lot more.

    Maybe I’m just wildly crazy here, but I think a $70 game from a big studio should run well. We’re not talking some $15 early access title here that lacks optimization because it’s like 2 guys making it in their free time.
