@petealexharris Also, some of the "non-essential" parts is exactly what gives a story character and life.Stripping out the non-essentials might possibly make sense for a purely factual work; but let's be honest, a math textbook wouldn't be very helpful if all it contained was formulas, theorems and lemmas.
